New to using hand dyed wool? Here are some helpful tips!

-Hand dyed yarn is sold in units called hanks. A hank is basically a large circle of yarn and definitely needs to be wound into a ball or cake prior to using. There are several options for this: you can wind your yarn into a cake or ball using a commercially available yarn winder and swift, you can place your hank around a chair back or other upright and stationary object and wind it into a ball by hand, or, for a small additional fee, I can wind it into a cake for you before mailing.

-Care for hand dyed wool yarn (and wool garments and products): once knitted or crocheted into the desired product, hand wash in cold water with a gentle detergent such as Woolite or Soak, squeeze out excess water by rolling it into a towel (never wring out a wool product), and lay flat to dry. Laundering wool products in the washer and dryer can damage the wool and/or cause felting and shrinking. If you must wash in the washer, place garment in a delicates bag to wash on the gentile cycle to prevent moving parts from snagging on the yarn. Placing wool items in the dryer can cause them to shrink.

-When storing wool yarn, garments, or products it can be very helpful to use cedar planks and/or sachets with lavender, orange, lemon grass, or peppermint in the area of storage to deter moths. Moth larvae eat the wool and these methods will not get rid of an already established infestation but can help deter moths from the area to begin with.
